I think you should get together a timelapse setup going for the next decomp study you find. One pretty cheap solution would be a CHDK compatible Canon Powershot P&S digital (I see these pretty regularly at thrifts for $10 or less, once $3)
CHDK is free, and in combination with a wall wart power cord for the camera and a large-ish memory card, would give you a setup capable of days/weeks-long timelapse sessions at speeds as fast as 1 shot per 20 sec.
