Optima - cold smithing

Debadged and ready for cleaning

Aluminium: 90mm x 9mm x 2.5mm
First bond
Second bond an hour later - masking turned out to be a good idea
Left paint removed using a wire brush, the right with a sandpaper flap-wheel, each attached to a drill
What crack?

National Poetry Day

Footnote: Young Casabianca, a boy about thirteen years old, son of the admiral of the Orient, remained at his post (in the Battle of the Nile), after the ship had taken fire, and all the guns had been abandoned; and perished in the explosion of the vessel, when the flames had reached the powder.

Lexi-Graphi-kon: smokin' tabs

The carriage brake and the arm that releases it

The link which trips the carriage brake to OFF and the escapement to ON when a tab stop is reached

How the link pictured above looks like when removed from another Graphika.

Graphika strap repair

End of strap folded over the hook and tapped flat
A hole punched through both layers with an awl into hard-ish wood so as not to deform the metal strap too much. The metal is easy to trim with tin snips or possibly even scissors. I used tin snips. A short length of solder.
I punched a hole into a piece of wood for the solder to fall into when melted through the hole in the strap. Sort of a well to make a rivet-type head.
Top of the solder. Not enough hands to actually show the soldering process but if you have a soldering iron, you'll know how it works.
Bottom of the solder. Makeshift rivet head flattened (carefully) with a hammer.

Graphika journey

Upside down carriage
Note the three register slots. Two on the left, one on the right.
The alternate spacing lever (on left) has to be removed before the cover. Bike spoke indicates its screw hole.
Fire basket meets word processor
'Spare parts' from the bottom of the box. L-R: strap hook, broken piece of strap, random spring
Pretty obvious where the random spring had to go
Don't say "pistachio", say "mushy peas"

Next time... how to fix broken steel carriage strap/drawband...
