London buses

The saying about London buses goes: you wait for ages and none arrives, then three come at once.

But in this case, two Hermes 3000s.

So, this item is a good price and "buy it now". Imagine the temptation.
Being described as faulty, but could just be a simple ribbon or drawband replacement,
or the seller doesn't know where the carriage lock is...
Then there's this one, no claims to be working but a much nicer case and with a price
approaching the top end of my limit.

  1. If I didn't have one already, I'd take a gamble on the broken one. Worst case scenario, you get a parts machine and learn a whole lot from tinkering with it.

    1. And there's the rub. I don't have one and would really like a good example if I can find one. Ted points out the left cardholder is gone on the 'more affordable' one - which is kind of putting me off it now.

  2. Not sure if the second case is really that much nicer... The hard Hermes handles I've already tested (Baby, 2000) feel pretty awkward.

    1. It is going to be a tough call, but it looks like I'm heading towards the second one anyway. Love a case with a belly button!

  3. Mine has a case like the first picture. The handle works well and is durable.

    1. Thanks Deek. It is like a lot of ones I have by Olympia.

  4. The first one has margins set very narrow (see red bands in paper bail), which might cause someone not familiar with the confusing Hermes 3k magic margin levers to think it's broken. However, the carriage lock lever is "on" so the carriage probably isn't moving at all, which may also cause the seller to think it's broken.

Left card-holder is busted off, though. Looks pretty clean & unscuffed. I'd get it for that price.

    1. Thanks for the eagle-eyes, Ted. Why didn't I spot that? Maybe as a once in a lifetime H3K purchase - I should avoid the broken one. I'd always be looking at the missing card holder.

    2. Card holder is easy to replace and I'm sure it would be a lot of fun hunting down a free/cheap card holder. I am sure someone has one willing to donate and shipping shouldn't be too bad...

I'm a, "save the money and connect with machine by fixing it up" type of guy. If its going to be your only one, make it count and get a connection with it!
