Saturday afternoons. Football (soccer) scores came this way - live - to black and white TV screens. The broadcast was a close-up of the type appearing on the paper roll. On a good day, messages read like this:MANCHESTER UTD 3 MANCHESTER CITY 1.
Very nostalgic. I spent the first four years of my journalism career (1965-69) sitting beside five of these. The sound is etched on my brain. The most memorable burst came as we watched Neil Armstrong's "one small step". The moment he landed, the machine started up and we raced to see what the message was: "Houston, today: Man has stepped foot on the moon", it said. End message.
That's fascinating and eerie!
